Lincoln Veterans bow out of EH Over 50s Masters Cup gracefully!

A tremendous competitive game of cup hockey was played at Chester Hockey Club last Sunday with Lincoln Veterans, last year’s semi-finalists, just losing by the odd goal of nine in the second round of the England Hockey Over 50s Masters Cup competition. Despite losing the game, this was a good performance by Lincoln who just found the opposition a little more consistent with their play in the second half compared with Lincoln dominating the first half.

Had three good chances not been squandered by Lincoln Veterans in the first nine minutes, this could have been a different story as Chester went on to open up the scoring with a breakaway goal. Then it was nip and tuck all the way to the end with Lincoln equalising and then Chester going in front again. Imps levelled again and then took the lead themselves to go 3 – 2 up only for Chester to level again with a Penalty Stroke. Again Chester went in front for Imps to equalise before Chester scored the winner with still plenty of time to play.

There was no disgrace in losing to Chester who showed the sort of form needed to go all the way in this competition and it was a shame there had to be a loser. This sort of game shows how close some of the teams are in this competition, which is now firmly established in the hockey calendar.
