Match Reports, 29th and 30th of October 2016 Match Reports, 29th and 30th of October 2016

The last weekend of hockey in October 2016 includes coverage of “Super Sunday”; a streak of wins right across the board. This week’s match reports, compiled by Sean O’Kelly, come from Ben Leeming and Chris Hearn.

Men’s 1st Team

  • v. Preston 2 (home), written by Ben Leeming
  • Drew 4 – 4 (Goal scorers: Rob Johnstone, Mike White [2], Harry Swift)

More promising result for Lindum 1s in an intense game

Lindum 1s started the game well against a strong Preston 2s side, despite early pressure for both teams, it was Lindum who struck first. Good work from the Johnstone brothers down the left resulted in a skilful deflection into the far corner for Rob after 10 minutes. Preston responded quickly, through a well-worked team goal and followed this up with a second, a low drag-flick, just before half time. HT 1-2.

Lindum struck back soon after the restart through a Mike White penalty corner and took the lead by the same means 20 minutes later. On 65 and 69 minutes, Preston equalised and took the lead again but with the last hit of the game, Harry Swift secured the point for Lindum with a scrappy finish. FT 4-4.

Team: Ward (GK), Leeming, Ingram, T White, Ferraby, Treadgold, M White, Knowles, G Johnstone, Corbett, R Johnstone, Swift, Saunders, Dewhurst, Temple-Baxter (Capt.)
Head Coach: Gary Johnson

Ladies 1st Team

  • v. Dereham 1 (away)
  • Lost 0 – 2

The ladies 1sts fell to defeat against recently relegated, and top of the league side Dereham on their travels. They fought well but were undone by a wrongly allowed goal early on, and a penalty stroke later in the game.

Men’s 2nd Team

  • v. Leeds 4 (away)
  • Lost 3 – 2 (Goal scorer: Chris Hearn, Angus Graham)

The 2nd XI remain in the bottom 2 of YHA Premier after defeat to Leeds 4ths. They had taken a 1-0 lead with a goal from Chris Hearn before conceding 3 without response. They managed to pull one back with a great goal from Angus Graham, but couldn’t find the equaliser in a spirited display.

Men’s 2nd Team (Sunday – EH Men’s 2nd XI Cup R2)

  • v. Wapping 2 (home), written by Chris Hearn
  • Won 3 – 2 (Goal scorers: Mark Sadler, Chris Hearn, Ben Bockett-Pugh)

Lindum faced tough opponents Wapping in the second round of the national 2nd Xl cup on Sunday at the Lindum sports ground. Wapping currently sitting top of their league having only lost one game all season.

It was the home side who started the stronger playing some great possession hockey which was making the visitors work very hard to try to get into the game. This possession led to several penalty corners and Lindum where unlucky not to go in front as the Wapping keeper made a string of fine saves to keep the scores level. But the relentless pressure being applied by the home side soon paid off when a great ball by Ferraby found Hearn inside the circle who neatly slotted the ball home through the keeper’s legs. Lindum would not let up and soon where rewarded with a penalty stroke after a Wapping defender stopped the ball on the line with his body. Youngman confidently stepped up but blazed the ball high and wide! The half time score was 1-0.

The second half started much the same as the first with Lindum on top and they soon doubled their lead when Bockett-Pugh tapped in from close range to make it 2-0. Lindum may have thought that they were home and dry now but this was not the case as Wapping really upped the ante and threw everything they could at the home side, and were rewarded with a well taken goal making the score 2-1. This spurred Lindum on again and they got back in control of the game when Sadler neatly slid the ball past the advancing keeper to make it 3-1. More chances cam the way of the home side but a mixture of good saves, the woodwork and some poor finishing meant that they didn’t add to their total. Just before the end Wapping scored again to make the final score 3-2.

This was a cracking result for Lindum 2s and hopefully they can now push on in their league campaign and put some wins on the board.

  • Drew 3 – 3 (Goal scorers: Matt Hulme, Kit Spence, Jacob Barnes)

The 3rds were held to a 3-3 draw at home to the University of Leeds 1sts. UoL had taken the lead in the first half, before Matt Hulme pulled a goal back shortly before half-time. UoL raced into a two-goal lead in the second half. Shane Barr soon won a penalty stroke, and was given the chance to pull a goal back for the Lindum outfit but fired wide of the mark. His blushes were partly saved, when a mishit shot from Hulme was deflected past the helpless Leeds keeper by Kit Spence. Late on, great work down the right hand side from Will O’Sullivan allowed Jacob Barnes to fire in from the right of the D and earn Lindum a hard-fought point.
