Match Report: Mens 1s Suffer Defeat in Season Opener Match Report: Mens 1s Suffer Defeat in Season Opener

Lindum Hockey Club’s Mens first team began the season with a 3-2 defeat at home against recently-relegated City of York 1s. Sean O’Kelly Reports.

The Mens 1st XI had led 2-0 but a number of turnovers in key areas allowed York to take the lead 4 minutes from full-time. The opening exchanges were played at a high tempo, with both sides creating half-chances, and it was Lindum who created the first real chance of the game. From the resultant penalty corner, Rob Johnstone took a heavy blow when seeking a far post deflection. He left the field of play in some pain, but returned to the pitch minutes later and opened the scoring with a smart strike into the bottom left corner with 13 minutes played. The rest of the half was fairly end but neither keeper was forced into any difficult saves. HT: 1-0.

York came out to start the second half with more urgency and were kept at bay by new signing Alan Sanderson, who joined this season from Brigg. With Lindum’s first penalty corner of the half, Mike White dragged low to the goalkeeper’s right to extend Lindum’s lead in the 43rd minute. York soon had a penalty corner of their own but could not convert, however they did reduce the deficit minutes later, as a ball across from Jack Purrington was unfortunately tipped in by a Lindum defender in the 49th minute. Five minutes later, and York equalised following a turnover in midfield. Their forward took the ball around Sanderson to the baseline and pulled it across for Jack Fletcher to tap in at the far post. This shocked Lindum into playing with more urgency, and they were inches away from re-taking the lead within a minute as a ball across from new recruit Matt Bell, deflected by the diving James Dewhurst, was touched onto the crossbar by the York keeper. Lindum continued to push forward but just couldn’t find the back of the net. And with four minutes to play, York’s Tom Feasby ran unopposed from the sideline to fire past Sanderson on his reverse from the top of the circle. A bitter blow for the team who then struggled to regain possession to carve out any late opportunities. FT: 2-3

Gary Johnson and Sam Temple-Baxtor reflect on their game against City of York 1

Overall, the lads put in a solid performance against a team that are likely to be challenging for the title, and were unlucky to be defeated. A draw would’ve been a fair reflection of the game, but it wasn’t to be. Plenty of positives to take forward into next week’s trip to Harrogate, who opened their campaign with a 3-3 draw at Chapeltown.
